Unread Rodent Story #1

This week I’ll be posting stories that were submitted for our recent Rodent Show that weren’t read due to time constraints.

This story comes to us from Erin in Wisconsin:

My husband, daughter and I had 10 days to find a house once our house sold, Florida housing market being the way it was. I found a 1920’s two bedroom bungalow ‘west of the trail’ (considered nice on the Florida suncoast) that was a little rundown. The day we moved in was fine though the rental company didn’t really clean before we moved in. A friend had cleaned the kitchen and unpacked some boxes, putting some stuff away.

That night, we ordered pizza, grabbed an adult beverage and went to the drawer for a beer koozie (those little things made of neoprene with the zipper that keeps a drink cold.) As I pulled open the drawer, I did the full body shivers. There were 5 palmetto bugs with our stuff in the drawer. For those who don’t know, that’s just a nice name for very large cockroaches! EWWWWW! I cried that night because it was all my fault that we had moved into this roach motel. The fun wasn’t over.

For nights, I couldn’t sleep. I just imagined the bugs crawling on me or my husband or my daughter in the night. EWWWW…..*full body shiver*……barf! The first night I actually fell asleep, I was woken at about 3 AM to scratching in the walls. It turns out, the fruit rats found out we were in the house and decided to pay us a visit. We kept a foam noodle duct taped on the bottom of the laundry room door to keep the rats, at least, in only one room. For the 10 months we lived there, we always had mice traps in the laundry room and the bug guy out spraying once a month. That helped but we still heard occasional scratching of the rats and found the weaker dying roaches legs up through the house.

As soon as we could scrape up the money for another security deposit and found a house built in the last 5 years without roaches and rats, we got the outta there. While the location and the cost of the ‘cute’ little bungalow was a blessing at the time, I still get the heebee-jeebee’s thinking about that place.

Keep up the good work! I’ve finally caught up to the podcasts and it only took me two weeks! I’m just now getting up to speed on the website and hope to join the forums soon. Good luck, David, on your move to Ireland, whenever it happens!
