Two years ago around Valentine’s Day my girlfriend and I were 15 years old. She had been hinting for months that she wanted me to send her flowers so near the end of January I ordered a bouquet from a popular online flower shop. They gave an option to choose a card to go with the flowers but the page wouldn’t load so I clicked the ‘no card’ option and finished my order.
V-day rolls around and I get a call from my girlfriend. She is really excited about the flowers and keeps thanking me. I’m feeling pretty awesome! But then her tone changes as she asks, “…but why did you send me a card with ‘For My Wonderful Wife’ on the cover? We’re 15 years old!”
I was stunned and wasn’t quite sure what to say in response. Apparently the online flower distributor had decided to choose a card for me. I explained that I hadn’t chosen a card due to technical difficulties. She said that she understood… it was her parents what were wondering! – Nate
Something like this happened to me once. I called my girlfriend and she answered. I was like, “Hey babe”. She giggled… and she didn’t usually giggle… ever. “What are we going to do tonight?” I asked. “Tee-hee, I don’t know. Whatever you want to do!” then she burst out laughing. It was then that I realized I had been talking to her mom the whole time. My face burned red from embarrassment. “Can I talk to Lucy!” was the only thing I could think of to say. I couldn’t look her in the face for a long time after that.
It’s funny how easily embarrassed we are in those wonderful high school years… especially when it comes to dating. Everything about dating, if you’re honest with yourself, is horrible. I’m glad it’s over for me. Those of you still going through it, you have my pity.
